Or how to feed an expectant mother during multiple pregnancy. Congratulations, you're having twins! Or how to eat for a future mother during multiple pregnancy. What physical exercises are allowed during pregnancy with twins and triplets?

Here it is - a long-awaited trip to the women's doctor, and a joyful message: you will have a baby!

And suddenly, in the eyes of the ultrasound doctor, a serious look and increased attention are visible, quickly replaced by a wide smile: Congratulations, you have twins (or even triplets)! This is news for the expectant mother! Happiness has no boundaries, but there are a thousand questions in my head: who will it be - boys or girls? Or maybe heterosexual? But now you’ll have to eat for three, or even four!

Either out of joy, or afraid of leaving the kids hungry, the happy mother first heads to the refrigerator and devours everything she finds on the shelves, while the equally happy dad supports the justification of his beloved’s unbridled appetite with the words “we are having twins”!

Indeed, the calorie content of a pregnant woman's food should increase depending on the number of fetuses in the tummy. But can you eat any food, and how much food should you stop at? What vitamins does a expectant mother need during multiple pregnancy? Experts talked to women's specialists and deeply studied the issue.

Multiple pregnancy - how does the diet of the expectant mother change?

If we do not take into account modern methods of fertilization in clinics (for example, IVF), natural statistics in Russia read: On average, 1 twin occurs per 85-90 births, 1 triplet per 85-95 twins (or once per approximately 8000-8100 births).

The expectant mother of several children must take a responsible approach to her daily diet. The calendar of pregnancy and development of one fetus is almost no different from carrying twins.

However, with multiple pregnancies, multiple complications occur much more often:

  • Anemia– lack of iron in the body. The cause of the development of the disease may be too rapid growth of the placenta for two babies.
  • Late toxicosis – in the 3rd trimester.
  • Placenta previa – it can block the entrance to the uterus and cause insufficient intrauterine blood circulation.
  • Uneven development kids.

To minimize possible complications, it is very important for expectant mothers not only to learn to lead a healthy lifestyle without bad habits. Proper nutrition and consumption of vitamins in the amount determined by your personal doctor (this is especially important when carrying twins or triplets) is the first and main point in a pregnant woman’s calendar. This is followed by caloric intake of food, drinking regimen and physical activity. But first things first.

Basic nutrition rules during twin pregnancy

Expectant mothers of twins or triplets should eat for two (three). This is true. But this concerns not so much the volume of food as its nutritional value. For example, in order for one child to receive a daily dose of calcium, a pregnant woman needs to drink 200 ml of milk per day and eat 110 g of salmon (the product is rich in vitamin D, which helps calcium to be absorbed and enter the bone tissue). If you are pregnant with twins, you need to drink 400 ml of milk and eat 220 g of salmon per day.

With such a quantitative load on the stomach, the expectant mother of two or more babies (which, by the way, puts a lot of pressure on the internal organs) needs to divide meals into 5-6 times a day. Nutritionists recommend eating food in small portions, but as often as possible.

Principles of nutrition during multiple pregnancy:

  • Eat at least 6 times per day (approximately every 3-4 hours).
  • Diet variety – you shouldn’t focus on any one food group: the richer your menu, the more healthy vitamins and minerals babies receive while still in the womb.
  • Drink milk before bed – this drink takes a long time to digest, so it maintains blood sugar levels throughout the night. Lack of sugar can have a bad effect on the nervous system of babies.
  • Drink more water – it reduces the risk of urogenital infections and prevents constipation.
  • Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks – give up any type of coffee, and also forget about alcohol. Tea can be drunk in moderation.
  • Salt your food according to your taste (the fact that during pregnancy you need to reduce salt intake to a minimum is a myth).

Daily calorie intake for a mother of twins

The data is provided for informational purposes only. The real need is always individual and depends on the amount of physical activity, lifestyle, number of fetuses, age and well-being of the mother, as well as many other factors.

On a note! During pregnancy twins a woman must dial 15.8 -20.5 kg, triplets - from 22.7 to 27.3 kg. Your personal physician will help you determine normal weight gain during pregnancy depending on the number of fetuses you are carrying.

How much fluid does a woman need to drink for the health of her two fetuses?

When it comes to the amount of fluid the body needs, many of us rush to remember how many cups of tea we drank over the past 24 hours. And this is a mistake. Tea, coffee, juices, sweet sodas and other drinks are not taken into account when nutritionists talk about the fluid norm for a person.

Every woman should know about the role of water in the life of pregnant women. Firstly, clean water maintains the body's fluid balance and prevents dehydration. Secondly, by drinking enough water, the expectant mother ensures that the babies are replenishing their reserves in a timely manner - after all, each fetus is actively developing and requires blood renewal and maintaining normal amniotic fluid.

In addition, about 1.5 liters of water are excreted daily with the urine of the expectant mother, and by sweating, pregnant women lose up to 0.5 liters of water.

It is easy to calculate that to replenish reserves, a pregnant woman needs to drink about 2 liters of clean water per day. Gynecologists sometimes recommend slightly acidifying the water - add lemon or cranberries: This infusion normalizes the functioning of the nervous system, strengthens the immune system, and enriches the body with vitamins.

Important!

  1. First trimester pregnancy with twins or triplets is often accompanied by severe toxicosis and frequent vomiting. That is why doctors recommend drinking at least 2.5 liters of water per day - this amount of liquid allows you to maintain water balance in the body.
  2. Second trimester– a relative period of rest: the babies are developing, the mother feels more or less well. But you shouldn’t forget that the belly is growing quickly and vital processes are intensifying: during this period, drink at least 2 liters of water daily.
  3. Third trimester pregnancy smoothly brings the expectant mother to the upcoming birth, which means that the body must stock up on fluid: large blood losses during childbirth negatively affect a woman’s health. Besides renewal of amniotic fluid occurs on average in the last months of pregnancy 8 times a day, which requires additional water reserves in the body. It is also important to remember that edema occurs more often during this period, and excessive fluid intake can threaten the health of mother and babies. Despite the frequent desire of pregnant women to eat something salty, gynecologists recommend minimizing the consumption of such food - this simple technique will reduce thirst, and not drink more water than the amount prescribed by your personal doctor, but at the same time maintain the necessary supply of fluid for the upcoming birth.

It should also be taken into account that the need for fluid differs greatly among women of different weight categories. For example, a pregnant woman weighing 50 kg needs to drink up to 2 liters of water per day, but if a woman weighs 80 kg, her body’s need is approximately 3 liters of water per day.

Well, perhaps each of us knows that in the hot season the body’s need for water increases.

What vitamins and minerals should I enrich my diet with?

During multiple pregnancies, experts recommend increasing the dose of the following elements:

  • Folic acid– from 0.8 mg to 1 mg per day.
  • Iron– from 40 mg to 80 mg per day. Higher doses are prescribed by the doctor if a pregnant woman has anemia.
  • Calcium– from 1200 mg to 2500 mg per day.

Since experts have already spoken in detail about the role of different groups of vitamins in our lives in the feature article “Spring Vitamin Deficiency,” there is no need to dwell on each individual element this time.

The following table contains information on the daily intake of the most important vitamins and minerals for pregnant women.

Vitamin Daily value for women Norm for pregnant women with one fetus Normal for pregnant women with twins and triplets What products contain
Folic acid 0.2-0.4 mg 0.4 g-0.8 mg 0.8-1 mg Greens, legumes, cabbage, citrus fruits

Making the right menu for multiple pregnancies (weekly menu)

Proper nutrition is the key to the healthy development of fetuses and the well-being of the expectant mother.

What foods and drinks should pregnant women avoid?

  • No. 1 on the junk food list during pregnancy - sugar, confectionery and bakery products. They entail disturbances in the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract, and can also cause allergies and lead to extra pounds.
  • Next ban – sausages, sauces, smoked meats, canned food. They can cause heartburn and are a source of harmful nitrites. Read about the benefits and harms of different groups of food additives in the topic “Beneficial and harmful food additives - desktop table.”
  • Alcohol as the cause of many congenital childhood pathologies, it is always contraindicated during pregnancy.

On a note! Do you suffer from heartburn during pregnancy? Frequent meals in small portions, a proper diet for heartburn and drinking plenty of fluids will help eliminate the unpleasant burning sensation - 6-8 glasses of water in a day.

What physical exercises are allowed during pregnancy with twins and triplets?

Intense physical activity is contraindicated for pregnant women with twins or triplets.

During such a pregnancy, experts recommend eliminating a number of exercises:

  • Cycling
  • Abdominal exercises
  • Sharp body bends and turns
  • Sharp jumps

The physical activity plan changes depending on the period of pregnancy:

  • First trimester- the most unsafe. During this period, you cannot make complex and intricate movements; it is recommended to perform only simple exercises.
  • Second trimester– a favorable period for physical activity. The woman feels well, the symptoms of toxicosis have disappeared, and there is no longer any threat of miscarriage.
  • During the third trimester It is difficult for a pregnant woman to perform exercises, so the recommended physical activity during this period involves fitball.
  • Before birth Experts recommend performing breathing exercises - they promote relaxation and reduce pain during the birth of the baby. Important! When performing breathing exercises, do not hold your breath! Otherwise, the child may develop hypoxia.

A set of exercises for pregnant women with twins (triplets)

Exercise First trimester Second trimester Third trimester
1. Take a chair with a backrest. Holding the chair with your hands, perform squats, spreading your legs to the sides. Sit on the floor with your legs crossed. Smoothly turn the body in one direction and the other. Take light dumbbells (up to 1 kg), sit on top of a fitball. Bend and straighten your arms with dumbbells.
2. Exercise for the pectoral muscles: clasp your hands in front of your chest, palm to palm. Squeeze your palms together with force. Clasp your hands behind your back. Do the same. Exercise “cat”: get on all fours, bend at the waist. Slowly bend in the opposite direction, forming a hump on your back. Repeat several times. Chest breathing exercise: place one hand on your chest, the other on your stomach. When inhaling, the chest rises, the stomach is motionless. Repeat several times.
3. Feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Rotate your pelvis in one direction and the other. Lie on your right side with both legs bent. Raise your left leg, bent at the knee, perpendicular to the bed. Lower slowly. Repeat on the other side. Diaphragmatic breathing: Place one palm on your stomach, the other on your chest, and take deep breaths in and out. Make sure that when you inhale, only your stomach rises and your chest remains motionless.
4. Kegel exercises to strengthen intimate muscles. Exercise "cat".

Such simple exercises will help maintain the physical health of the expectant mother until childbirth.

Most people only know about the existence of identical and fraternal twins. But, in all likelihood, other species also occur in nature. I may be so-called “half-identical” twins. They are born when, during the formation stage, an egg is split into two identical halves and fertilized by two sperm. Thus, they occupy an intermediate position between dizygotes, which develop from two separate eggs, and monozygotes, which develop from one sperm. Twins can also have different fathers. If a new egg is released after the first one has already developed into an embryo within a month, then the second one can be fertilized during the next sexual intercourse. In essence, these are stepchildren, since they have the same mother and different fathers.

Identical twins, who make up a third of their total number, do not follow any biological rules. Among representatives of different races, there are approximately four twins per thousand births. But sometimes these averages are upset, as in the case of Suzanne and Don Taft of Corpus Christi, Texas. Four of their five children are identical twins.

In the occurrence of fraternal twins, chance plays a lesser role. One thing is certain: they are more often born in families where there is a predisposition to this. A study of 4,000 Mormon mothers found that if they themselves were twins, their chance of having twins was one in 58. Those without twins in their family tree had just over a one in a hundred chance of getting pregnant with twins. A woman is more likely to have twins if she becomes pregnant soon after stopping birth control pills, as this releases more gonadotropin, a hormone that stimulates ovulation. A Yale University study found that women who used birth control and became pregnant within two months of stopping were twice as likely to have twins than others.

One of the latest and most remarkable discoveries related to twins is the establishment of the fact that more embryos are initially formed than children are ultimately born. This phenomenon has been called “vanishing twin syndrome.” An ultrasound examination shows that by the fifth month of pregnancy, in 70 percent of cases, only one embryo remains from two embryos. Apparently, many “singleton” children are born as twins. This perhaps confirms the assumption that the vague longing for a certain “double” that many children experience has a certain biological basis. Dr. Louis Keith, a gynecologist from Chicago, believes that double conception occurs in at least 20 percent of cases, and not at all in 1 in 90, as can be judged from birth statistics.

The embryo can disappear in two cases. For unknown reasons, the placenta can be absorbed by the mother's body. This has no effect on the surviving twin. But in an act of a kind of cannibalism, the embryo can also “absorb” its fellow, retaining the remains of the deceased twin for many years after birth. That's exactly what happened to Nick Hill, a service station operator in Idaho. Throughout his life, Hill complained of excruciating headaches. Eventually, when he was 21, doctors performed surgery on Nick, finding some fetal bones, skin and hair from the remains of an unborn twin. In other people, cysts were found containing vestigial teeth, hair or limbs - probably the remains of a non-surviving twin.

At the Gregor Mendel Institute in Rome, Jedda and his colleagues noticed striking features in the development of twins.

“We found out that identical twins need to be treated at the same time,” says Jedda. —If one tooth has a cavity, then the other will soon form one in the same place.

The twins start teething at about the same time and go bald together. Jedda is convinced that the genes have a kind of “built-in clock” that activates development at such turning points in life. The genetic clock hypothesis may help explain why twins J. Springer and J. Lewis get headaches at the same time of day.

But how then to explain the case of Bridget and Dorothy Lowe, identical sisters separated shortly after birth? When they met 34 years later, they were surprised to find that each of them wore seven rings, and a watch and a bracelet on her wrist. Bridget's children were named Richard Andrew and Karen Louis, and Dorothy's children were Andrew Richard and Catherine Louis, respectively.

No scientist would seriously argue that somewhere in the structure of our chromosomes there is a gene that determines the wearing of rings or the names of children. Nevertheless, the similarity in the behavior of Bridget and Doroga may still have a genetic basis. Let’s say that a woman inherited a beautiful hand shape from her parents, which did not go unnoticed by her friends. Over time, the sisters, perhaps wanting to emphasize this dignity, began to wear many rings. And the names of their children? Here, to be honest, it is difficult to find any logical explanation. The likelihood of two people independently choosing the same names for their children is too small to call it a coincidence.

“Oh, I have one child, and I don’t have time to do anything! I’m afraid to imagine what it’s like to be a mother of twins or triplets!” We learned everything first hand. Gives me goosebumps...

“I thought three was too much”

Meet Yaroslava ( @ya.kirillova), suddenly a mother of three sons, two of whom are twins.

“When I found out at 7 weeks of pregnancy that I was carrying twins, I was shocked. And even terrified! Of course, I didn’t even think about abortion, but I was very upset. Not because I didn’t want twins, but because, in principle, I thought that three children was too much, and I was only in the mood for a second one.

The husband was happy. He may not have realized then all the difficulties we would face. And I didn’t understand what was happening at all. I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that so suddenly there would be not three of us, but five. I couldn’t imagine our life and felt very sorry in advance for our eldest son Artem, who was only one year and two months old at the time of the birth of the twins.

I remembered with a shudder the first months with my son, and now there will be two newborns. It was scary to think what I would turn into; it seemed like I wouldn’t sleep at all. In general, all the worries about the children fell on my shoulders, and my head was spinning.

At the very first ultrasound I was told that the twins were identical and the twins would be identical. Then I crossed my fingers: “At least they were boys.” No, I once wanted a girl, but after the birth of my eldest son, I immediately changed my mind - I was so in love (of course, and still in love) with my firstborn. I really wanted the twins to look like Artemka. But they were born almost bald, unlike my shaggy one. This was the first thing I noticed in the maternity hospital and, to be honest, I was immediately upset. Actually, it was probably something like postpartum depression. For some reason I felt very sorry for my newborn children, I wanted to go home to my eldest son, and in the first days it seemed that I would never love them as much. Of course I was wrong.

From nine in the morning to ten in the evening I am at home, mostly alone with three children. My parents come on weekdays every day for a couple of hours. At this time I am cooking. Thank God, my husband shares the cleaning with me, I’m lucky to have him.

I go for walks with the children in turns: either with the twins, and someone stays at home with the eldest, or with Artem. The mother-in-law sometimes also goes for walks with the firstborn. In general, I don’t go out alone with three, and sometimes I have to sit at home for two or three days without going out.

My day is a whirlwind of diapers, bottles, endless pities and kisses from one, then another, then the third. It very rarely happens that all three of them yell, and not just yell, but throughout the day they take turns being capricious, without ceasing. And when I don’t take turns, I sometimes go crazy. And the eldest gets it the most (it’s useless for the younger ones to say anything): I can break down and scream. Naturally, it’s only worse for me afterwards; the feeling of guilt hits me almost instantly. Therefore, I try to go to the kitchen or bath as soon as possible to calm down. Yes, they will yell there for an extra couple of minutes, but it’s better than me being furious and carelessly grabbing someone or yelling at them.

I won’t try to reassure anyone, it’s hard. Mainly morally. But there is one good news for those who are just about to become a large family - you get used to everything! After a couple of months, everything goes as planned, and you begin to forget that it was once different. You stop noticing something, you don’t hear something, you don’t pay attention to something. For example, if the eldest goes to make a mess in the kitchen, and at this time I am spoon-feeding the twins and trying not to get anyone dirty, so that I don’t have to change clothes later, then I will simply accept the fact that I will have to clean the kitchen. At such moments you stop being nervous. The child is busy, the child is playing - well, good.

There is catastrophically little time for yourself. I dye my hair, for example, or take a shower only at night, when everyone is sleeping. I probably really want to believe in this, I will be able to relax a little when the children grow up and start playing together.”

“Now the fun begins”

Maria ( @mari_tws) at the first ultrasound they said that there was only one fertilized egg. And after a while, it unexpectedly turned out that two daughters were growing in it - Sofia and Ksenia.

“When I found out that there would be two of them, my emotions knew no bounds: I cried, and laughed, and was afraid. For almost the entire nine months, I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to respect and give love to two children at the same time. I constantly read articles and books about twins and triplets, tried to remember the advice of mothers.

The first and second trimesters of pregnancy went well, but I wanted to sleep all the time. But from the 30th week, difficulties began: when a woman is pregnant with twins, she needs to frequently measure the cervix to prevent premature dilatation, but my doctor missed this point. At 30 weeks, I went to one diagnostic center to see a hematologist, where I was referred for an ultrasound. The doctors were shocked because I almost gave birth there. I was immediately put on safekeeping.

Before the birth itself, I gave myself the attitude that I would cope for the sake of the girls, I would succeed. And so it happened: it was as if I knew everything in advance, my roommate even asked me for help with her one child. The babies were born at 37 weeks naturally, doctors say, very quickly. They were only small and took a week to gain weight.

Twins' first birthday

Until the girls were six months old, my biggest problem was carrying them to term and giving birth to them healthy. The rest was very simple: they only ate and slept. Now, after a year, the most interesting thing begins: my girls are exploring the world. Try it, succeed in every one! They fight: even though you buy the same toys and generally have everything equally, they can’t divide it! But, it seems to me, now this time will pass, they will become older, and will play well with each other and help their mother!

We take turns, I always repeat to them: “You are not alone, you have a sister, you need to wait.” But in general, in the evenings, after we put the children to bed, we can watch TV series with our husband or have a romantic evening. I have never forgotten about myself: I always take care of myself, and my husband helps me with this - he lets me get a manicure and go shopping. Our dad can also handle the kids himself.

My daughters are so different. Every time I thank God that I have two of them: it’s so interesting and touching - they’ve been together since the womb. It touches me when they miss each other, how they don’t want to sleep without each other, they are one whole, but at the same time different, dissimilar personalities.”
