At the time of buying new car the old one is taken into account. With a discount, you can buy any premium tank from Tier VI to Tier VIII inclusive from those available in the World of Tanks client.

Most premium vehicles from Tier IV to Tier VIII are accepted for credit, with a few exceptions.

Trade in tank exchange

You can exchange your tank for vehicles of the same level or higher. Turning in a Tier VIII tank and buying a Tier VI or VII will not work. According to the rules, changing premium tanks by trade in means getting a discount when buying a new premium tank. By giving away your premium tank, you get compensation for it in the form of 50% of its value in game gold. The missing part of the gold will have to be paid.
