CCTV Cameras. The best IP cameras for video surveillance Choosing an IP surveillance camera

Have you decided to purchase an IP video camera, but are “lost” in the multitude of models and their characteristics? Don't know where to start and where to stop when choosing? Believe me, everything is not as scary as it might seem at first glance - provided that you know For what you need an IP camera. That is, you know the answers to the following questions:

  • where the video camera will be installed;
  • whether the camera should be visible;
  • what is the lighting in this place;
  • you need a general overview or a detailed picture;
  • should the camera be able to turn and follow a moving object;
  • Are audio options needed?
  • price range... and something else.

Installation location

Depending on the location of installation, video cameras are divided into outdoor and indoor. An indoor camera can be installed in an apartment, office, or other temperature and humidity controlled location. Outdoor cameras can operate at low temperatures, they are not afraid of rain, wind and dust - like, for example, the popular model. It makes sense to pay attention to the installation features - if it is important for you to install the camera in a certain place (on a wall, ceiling or inclined surface).

Noticeable or miniature?

This is more of a psychological moment. A miniature camera (such as this one) will allow you to observe what is happening without being noticed. You will know how people behave when they think no one is watching. But if you want people to know that they are being watched, you can buy any camera without worrying about its size. True, in this case you may need a video camera in a vandal-proof housing - such as, for example.

Illumination and sensitivity

This is one of the most important factors when choosing a camera. Will the video camera be used in more or less stable lighting conditions? Or do you need a camera that can work in both dark and bright sun? Will there be both bright and dark areas in the frame?

If you want the camera to work around the clock, including in low light, pay attention to video cameras with a day/night function and IR illumination, such as the popular model. Day/night modes switch automatically (when a certain light threshold is reached), so you will always see a high-quality picture (color during the day, black and white at night).
If the light level varies widely, it makes sense to purchase a camera with an auto aperture.

If there is contrasting illumination in the frame area with alternating light and shadow (for example, if the camera is installed opposite a window), it is recommended to choose a camera with WDR (wide dynamic range) to “even out” the illumination - such as.

General overview or picture details?

The answer to this question determines the focal length of our camera and its resolution. If you need a general overview (for example, monitoring an entrance or room), then you need to purchase a camera with a wide-angle lens and VGA resolution. Such a video camera will give a general idea of what is happening - but you will not see small details.

To distinguish a car license plate, a person's face or the denomination of a banknote, you will need a high-resolution video camera with a variable focal length lens. To determine the denomination of banknotes, resolution is more important (megapixel cameras), and to identify the number you need a long-focus lens.

We follow the object

Yes, there are such cameras! With ZOOM and PTZ control - like a mini-dome camera, for example. Many IP cameras also have a built-in motion detector that can monitor movement in several areas simultaneously. And privacy masks will allow you to hide some areas of the frame to ensure privacy.

Getting more information

Even if the camera is megapixel, but the objects in the observed scene are moving very quickly, then the video image recorded at a low frame rate will not always allow one to understand the situation. Such problems do not arise if a multi-megapixel IP camera provides a high broadcast speed of 30 or even 60 fps, as the BEWARD BD3670M model can do. Moreover, the function of automatically adjusting the back focus implemented in this camera also avoids difficulties with accurately focusing the image when working with multi-megapixel cameras.

Video quality and stream size

The video image generated by the IP camera is then transmitted over the network and recorded in the data storage system. In order not to overload the network and to ensure greater archive depth with a small storage system volume, the camera must support modern highly efficient compression algorithms, such as H.264 HighProfile, as well as work with individual sections of the image, as in the BEWARD N 37210 camera. This will significantly reduce the cost of the video surveillance system.

Audio + Video

Many video cameras have a built-in speaker and microphone or connectors for connecting them. In this case, you can not only observe the site, but also hear what is happening. And if necessary, warn the offender by making contact with him or by playing a pre-recorded message. Comfortable? Still would! And the level of security of the facility is high! Check out, for example, the excellent camera with two-way audio support.

What type of food to choose

Modern IP cameras can support several power supply methods: from 12 V DC and 24 V AC sources, as well as PoE technology. The last method is the most convenient, because... in this case, data and power are transmitted over one cable. Moreover, HighPoE technology with a power of 60 W allows you to not only transfer data and power over one cable, but also provide heating and, accordingly, efficient operation in severe frost of even high-speed dome PTZ cameras, for example, BEWARD BD 75-5-P.

Let's talk about prices

The desire to save money and buy a budget item can often be understood - but not when it comes to security. And video cameras are bought to protect life, health and property.

The video camera must be reliable.

And the reliability of the camera is ensured by the reputation of the manufacturer and supplier, since you can be confident in the quality of the product. The Videoglaz company is a certified distributor of video surveillance products from many well-known manufacturers. We present both expensive European brands and high-quality, but budget, Asian brands. In addition, we offer products from Russian manufacturers with an optimal price/quality ratio.

Which? Ah, network!

Choose a camera that is most compatible with your preferences and wishes. Do not buy goods from dubious brands from unverified suppliers - take care of your safety!

Until recently, video surveillance was carried out only at military facilities, banks and large stores. The rapid development of electronics has made it possible to create affordable and effective IP cameras for the home. With their help, you can not only detect the entry of uninvited guests into your home, but monitor the behavior of a child left at home, take care of elderly people from a distance, and also make sure that there are no electrical appliances turned on.

What to look for when choosing an IP video camera

Modern devices allow you to view video materials after work or monitor the situation in the house using a PC or mobile device. The capabilities of IP cameras for the home have expanded so much that you can monitor day and night, establish two-way communication with children, the elderly or pets. Organizing a surveillance system has become easier for professionals too. A dozen inexpensive cameras can be installed in all areas of the store or placed around the perimeter of the building. When choosing a model for your home or office, you should pay attention to several operating parameters.

  • The cost of IP cameras varies greatly. In some cases, it is more profitable to install one high-quality device in order to get a clear image from a rectangular room. If the space is divided into zones or you need to monitor several small rooms, then it is more convenient to install inexpensive models by connecting them into one system.
  • Outdoor cameras must remain operational over a wide range of temperatures. For Russia, where the temperature in winter drops to -30°C, it is necessary to select appropriate devices.
  • When installing an IP camera outside the house, it is important to consider the legal aspect. Video surveillance is permitted within your own area, as well as the nearby sidewalk. Filming neighbors, much less publishing videos of people who come into view outside the personal plot, is not allowed.

Our review includes the best IP cameras for video surveillance. The rating was compiled taking into account the following criteria:

Features of IP CCTV cameras

Even the best IP cameras for video surveillance have limitations due to the technology platform that can affect the usability of a particular device.

The most notable of them:

  1. temporary delay. It is not possible to get true real-time video because the camera needs to compress and process the signal for transmission. Therefore, comparing CCTV cameras in this aspect allows us to understand the applicability of digital devices for solving problems where the degree of synchronization is of great importance;
  2. transmission range. , through which data is exchanged, can provide only 100 m of line length without intermediate amplifiers;
  3. vulnerability of wireless protocols. A sufficiently powerful source of interference will easily create a situation where even the best IP cameras for video surveillance will not be able to broadcast the signal. The risk of not recording a break-in or other criminal activity is significantly reduced if you purchase a device with the function of recording video to a memory card when there is no communication channel.

But overall, digital devices offer compelling opportunities. For example, the best IP camera for the home can be extremely small, interact with the Internet, offer remote access, record by event or schedule, and record movement in the room.

What parameters to consider when choosing an IP camera

To quickly select an IP video camera based on its parameters, you should adhere to a certain algorithm.

  1. Temperature and other operating conditions are determined, based on which the model class (outdoor or indoor), as well as the protection class and operating range are selected.
  2. The nature of the area being monitored is investigated. Based on the data obtained, a directional type model with static installation or a dome camera is selected.
  3. Specific observation parameters are determined. Do you need to focus on different points, enlarge the image, change the viewing angle, be able to set the trajectory of the observation point? PTZ devices can solve this problem.
  4. The preferred method of data transfer and remote access is selected. This could be the use of a proprietary cloud service, wireless protocols for interaction with the head unit, or a wired channel.
  5. It analyzes whether it is necessary to work with a memory card to record video in case of communication failures.

The last step is to select the capabilities offered by digital devices. This could be software motion detection, face recognition and much more.

It would not be amiss to foresee some difficulties. For example, cameras equipped with external antennas or offering several mechanisms for broadcasting video streams look attractive.

Conclusion

Despite some disadvantages inherent in digital devices, IP cameras are confidently conquering the market. They don't need DVRs to convert the data.

Compact home models connect directly to the computer, and those designed to solve complex problems can interact with a variety of services and storage.

All that remains for the user is to choose the right camera according to the parameters. This is not difficult to do, and then the purchased model will fully realize its capabilities.

When purchasing outdoor equipment, you need to take into account the tasks that will be assigned to it and a number of technical indicators. To ensure that purchasing an outdoor IP camera does not become a waste of money, let’s consider the main characteristics that it should have.

General characteristics

Typically, recording equipment is equipped by the manufacturer with an external 12 Volt (DC12V) power supply. But for equipment that is used outside, in some cases 220V power can be used. In this case, power must be transmitted along with the video image over the same Ethernet wire.

Thanks to PoE technology, equipment can be located in hard-to-reach places. But the power may not be enough to operate the camera and heat it. And installing a camera in a thermal housing may require additional power to power its elements, for example, ventilation, heating, and glass cleaning.

Most good outdoor IP cameras allow emergency recording to a memory card. Thus, you can record in emergency mode, without a direct connection to the network. This increases the reliability of the entire system as a whole.

Outdoor cameras often use a standardized WiFi protocol. This feature reduces the cost of creating a network because there is no need to purchase and install cables. For example, a typical outdoor WiFi camera can transmit data over a distance of up to 30 km at a speed of 54 Mbit/second. In addition, several cameras can operate within the same WiFi zone, but the actual speed may be lower than that declared by the manufacturer due to interference and obstacles in the signal path.

Housing type and protection

Modern video surveillance cameras are available in several main types of housing:

  1. Dome. Outwardly it looks like a hemisphere, which is most often attached to the ceiling in a room. A frameless modular camera is inserted inside the plastic case.
  2. Finger. A very compact device that is low in cost. At the same time, such cameras have earned a reputation as reliable products with good performance.
  3. Modular. It differs in that it may actually not have any body. That is, a module is purchased that forms the basis of the camera. It can be installed in any piece of furniture. But when recording outdoors, such a device must be securely hidden to ensure protection. They are not suitable for working in cold and heat. Or install it in a thermal casing, but it’s easier and cheaper to just buy an outdoor camera
  4. Corpus. The chamber is equipped with a hermetic casing that protects against cold weather. Often this type of product is sold without a lens, which must be purchased separately.
  5. Rotary. It is in demand specifically in street shooting conditions. It is a universal device with control functions. Some products have internal menu or lens controls. More complex ones can rotate 360 degrees around an axis. Look for such cameras in our catalog by filters: Dome and PTZ Control

In our catalog you can select outdoor IP cameras by housing type:

Anti-vandal protection- this is a necessary attribute of any outdoor camera. It is a housing with a special, increased degree of protection. Such devices are used to monitor the perimeter of an object and its territory. The body is made of hard-to-destruct material. Thanks to this, such a camera is not afraid of the actions of street hooligans and robbers.

Climatic performance

Outdoor equipment requires a special climatic design, which is related to its operating conditions. It features a more reliable and sealed housing, as well as a built-in heating function. It must be taken into account that the chamber will be subject not only to temperature fluctuations, but also to high humidity, wind load, and polluting effects.

For these reasons, its housing must be corrosion-resistant and provide adequate protection to the embedded equipment and matrix. The camera must have a waterproof housing, and some models come with a built-in heater and/or fan.

Matrix and resolution

Resolution is a criterion that is directly responsible for the quality and detail of the image. It makes it possible to evaluate the details of an object. 2-3 megapixel resolution is considered standard for most equipment today. The spread of the new H265 compression format will make it possible to increase this indicator.

In general, IP cameras have good image detail, which is extremely necessary for street monitoring. Thanks to this, it is possible to achieve the necessary identification of persons or recognition of vehicle license plates. However, any intention to achieve maximum resolution results in more significant costs for the customer - they are associated with the installation and maintenance of such systems. In this case, the cost of the camera itself increases, as well as system requirements, including the size of the archive.

Therefore, resolution must be considered integral to the tasks that the camera will perform. For many objects, 1 megapixel resolution is sufficient to provide recording and recognition. In this case, it will be possible to significantly reduce the overall budget for creating network video surveillance.

The matrix refers to the basic elements of video surveillance. It is a collection of cells, and its size is measured in inches diagonally. At the same time, the size of the matrix itself does not directly affect the quality of the picture, but the higher it is, the larger the size of the IP camera will be.

Most often, cameras use a CMOS matrix, which transforms the incident light into an outgoing electrical signal. Another type of matrix is CCD, which has a higher quality image. However, they are more expensive compared to CMOS. They have increased sensitivity and quality of the transmitted image.

This is a new technology, and its parameters are ideal for organizing street surveillance with video recording. Matrixes with CMOS technology cannot boast the same image quality, for example, in low light conditions. However, they are popular due to their more affordable price.

IR illumination

Infrared lighting allows the video camera to see even better than the human eye. To do this, the camera is equipped with a backlight with built-in IR diodes. In this case, the device will be able to record even in absolute darkness, which is important for street surveillance. But it is necessary to take into account that in such conditions the food consumption will be significantly higher.

Such cameras work thanks to thermal radiation - it is invisible to the human eye, but allows you to achieve good image quality. During daylight hours, such equipment operates without the use of IR illumination, and the infrared mode is turned on when a certain illumination level is reached. But this function also has its weaknesses: reflectivity, dust, changes in frame rate or pulsation rhythm.

Lens

The lens deserves special attention, as it can either worsen or significantly improve the image quality of the object. There is no point in having an expensive camera if it will work with a low quality lens that comes with plastic lenses. For outdoor equipment, lenses are usually used that do not allow automatic aperture adjustment. Due to direct sunlight, the camera matrix quickly burns out.

If you need to achieve high picture quality, then it makes sense to select the lens for the camera manually yourself. Some CMOS cameras may require lenses equipped with an IR cut filter. Wide-angle lenses have become increasingly popular lately. They successfully combine high resolution and panoramic views.

Night mode

Color cameras have insufficient ability to see in the dark, and therefore the presence of a “night mode” option can play an important role for the customer. The very appearance of this mode is due to the fact that color cameras are becoming increasingly widespread. And unlike black and white, their sensitivity at night is significantly reduced.

For these purposes, the camera is equipped with a sensor that measures the level of illumination. As soon as it reaches a certain level, the equipment switches to night, black and white mode. A more complex method involves the use of an IR filter, which also turns on when darkness comes and visibility deteriorates.

If the customer does not want to reduce the night image capabilities, but wants to save on the cost of purchasing a system, it makes sense to use black and white IP cameras for the street. But in cases where the budget allows, it is better to opt for cameras with night mode and an IR filter. During daylight hours, they will allow you to receive an informative and high-quality color image, and at night, a detailed black and white image that will be perfectly recognizable.

Thus, you can make sure that the outdoor IP camera is a multifunctional network device that can work perfectly on its own. It is easy not only to install, but also to further maintain and operate. Due to the fact that such equipment requires high bandwidth, it requires the creation of a separate independent network.
