Present Isaac Izrailevich - Lysenko's right hand. Isaac Izrailevich Present: biography With which the present is associated

In 1934, a new employee appeared among Lysenko's closest associates, who immediately overshadowed all other associates of the Ukrainian academician with his person - Isai Prezent (according to the documents, he was listed as Isaac, but Isai stuck to him from the time of his life in Leningrad, and so it remained). And in the works of Soviet biologists and many Western experts one can read that it was Prezent who supplied Lysenko with Marxist phraseology, and transferred his allegedly purely agronomic conversations to the plane of ideological struggle (4_12). I hope that everything written in the previous chapters frees me from the need to refute this point of view. But one cannot fail to admit that the Present really gave this side of Lysenko's activity a diabolical brilliance.

Isaac Izrailevich Prezent was born in 1902, graduated in 1926 from the three-year faculty of social sciences at Leningrad State University (Bubnov Leningrad University) (4_13). According to some reports, before entering the University, Present visited Germany (1923?), and before that he visited Iran.

He allegedly published a book about one of the sectarian religious movements that arose in the countries of the Middle East in the 19th century - Bahaism (named after its founder Mirza Hussein Ali Behaullah - according to Bahaism, in particular, science should unite with religion ( 4_14).

After graduating from the university I.I. The present was noticed by N.I. Vavilov and accepted into VIR. But a year later, Present leaves from there (4_14), taking away the hostility towards Vavilov, which he had retained all his life. Present gets a place in as a specialist in the field of dialectical materialism. In 1930, he was mentioned among the leaders of the Leningrad branch of the Communist Academy (4-15), in the same year he became chairman of the Leningrad Society of Materialist Biologists.

In 1931, he headed the department with the strange name "Department of Dialectics of Nature and Evolutionary Teachings" of Leningrad State University, while remaining at the same time an assistant professor at the Pedagogical Institute and a researcher of the 1st category of the Institute of Philosophy of the Leningrad Branch of the Komakademiya (4_16).

Peru Presenta by this time owned several printed works (4_17). He could easily work in Leningrad further, but his relations with colleagues were constantly deteriorating due to his intolerable character and the constant desire to expose and stigmatize someone.

Raikov was arrested, tried and exiled to the North, from where he could return only in 1945, after which he was elected a member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences.

Before joining with Lysenko, Present presented himself as an implacable fighter for dialectical materialism, for Darwinism, even for genetics, properly understood. For example, in 1932 he praised the work of the young geneticist N.P. Dubinin, who came into the focus of attention of the Soviet press. Student A.S. In 1929-1932, Dubinin, together with other employees of Serebrovsky's laboratory, carried out a series of interesting works on the fragmentation of the gene (4_21), and Prezent decided to capitalize on the popularization of the achievements of the geneticist who was becoming fashionable.
Academician appointed by Stalin to VASKhNIL in 1935.

The unpleasant character traits of Prezent led to many conflicts, and after Raikov's arrest, everyone around him began to fear and despise him at the same time, and, realizing that this could not end well, Prezent began to look for where he could go to work. He decided to join the rising star of Soviet science - Lysenko.

After Prezent went with Lysenko to Askania-Nova in the summer of 1933, the connection between them was restored (4_25), and Prezent instantly and sharply changed the polarity of his statements, beginning to characterize the work of geneticists in a negative way. In 1956, Dubinin reminded Prezent of his "vacillations", to which Prezent, in his usual manner, objected:

“But almost twenty-five years have passed since 1932, and during this time I, Nikolai Petrovich, have learned something and at least a little wiser, which, unfortunately, cannot be said about “someone” (4_26). Thinking of becoming Lysenko's partner, Present, in his characteristic manner, immediately began to extol Lysenko in his speeches, mentioning his "outstanding achievements" in place and out of place (4_27).

Characteristically, in one of his reports of that period, Present showed that his views coincided with Lysenko's on yet another issue: he spoke out against the use of mathematics and against statistical and probabilistic approaches to the evaluation of biological regularities. As we can see, for Lysenko the alliance with Prezent was also useful, because, despite his superficiality, Isai Izrailevich was (or seemed to be) Lysenko a storehouse of knowledge in various fields in which Lysenko was a complete ignoramus. And, of course, Lysenko, although he was attracted to polemics, was inferior to Prezent in one respect: in the ability to juggle bitingly with quotations from various fields - from the statements of the classics of Marxism-Leninism to excerpts from the books of Holy Scripture.

Small in stature, nimble, even fidgety, now waving his arms, now starting to dance, lighting up at the sight of any pretty girl, every minute ready to refute something with fervor or, on the contrary, accept it with no less fervor, the Present is the best approached Lysenko and his equally grey, simple surroundings.

After moving to Odessa, he assumed the title of professor, although just a few months before that, everyone knew him only as an unauthorized assistant professor. He brought into Lysenko's everyday life brightness, catchiness, rattling quotes from leaders, frank politicking, served under the sauce of uncompromising (or perhaps reckless) concern for the cleanliness of banners - qualities that this company lacked and which were so necessary for prosperity in those years.

He also did one more important thing for Lysenko. Claiming to be the founder of a whole doctrine, Lysenko somehow did not very skillfully shape both the baggage and the entourage of the "teaching". He could not find an appropriate bright shell for the "teaching", failed to properly formulate the thesis about what kind of teaching this is. And the clever Present succeeded in this in the best way. He already knew that there could be a Marxist-Leninist philosophy, a Darwinian biology, a Stalinist doctrine of the intensification of the class struggle as socialism flourished. There was something excessive, perhaps even dangerous, in the phrase "Lysenko's biology". It was necessary to find a different banner, with a different motto, and Present, who boasted of his acquaintance with Michurin (he even had a photograph in which he was captured together with Michurin), came up with the idea: the eclectic mishmash of Lysenko's pseudo-innovations was given the name of Michurin.

The present took the last exams for students at Leningrad University in the spring session of 1934 (among those who took the exams was Daniil Vladimirovich Lebedev, who in the future will become one of the most powerful fighters against Lysenkoism). In the summer, Present wandered between Leningrad and Odessa (at that time some of his printed works were published in Leningrad), and in the autumn he finally moved from the banks of the Neva to the Black Sea. They lived with Lysenko soul to soul, experiencing mutual joy from the joint chatter and from the abundance of deeds.

Since 1935, Prezent became co-editor of the journal "Vernalization", which replaced the Bulletin of Vernalization.

Only one major trouble awaited him in 1937. The botanist P.A. Baranov (future corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and director named after Komarov) found Lysenko in a state of confusion. Trofim called Baranov to his house, they drank heavily, and then Trofim began to roar, smearing drunken tears over his face and wailing: " What-oh-oh-oh me poor-u do! Isaiah has been arrested! Isaiah needs to be rescued! What am I to do without him, boo-oo-dy-y!" (personal communication of D.V. Lebedev). Isaik managed to help out - the crime was not very terrible at that time: he was taken for seducing a minor, and the case was somehow amicable settled, Trofim helped.

I. Present in the memoirs of contemporaries

I. G. Yes, Isai Present. Everyone was afraid of him.
AD Well, not everyone was afraid. Opposite type. But they kicked him out of the university. True, by a vile reception, in his spirit. They used one of his texts, where it contradicts Stalin's point of view. They told him: "Either you leave, or we will publish it." And then, when the thaw came, Present returned. There was an order from the ministry to restore him, removing Zavadsky from the chair of Darwinism. I did not comply with this order, I said this at the party activists, they began to applaud me.
I. G. How did you manage to do it?
A.D. They say that in those days nothing could be done contrary to the instructions from above. Generally speaking, the fact is that the most indignant people, the lackeys, are most outraged by the past. The footman hates the master and nothing more. Khrushchev was on that party activist. He is in closing remarks shouted to me: “How is it that the rector does not follow orders? For this, they are expelled from the party, removed from work, and in war time are shot." He yelled and that was the end of it. The presentation was sure to be restored. I didn't let him into the University. There was no need to be too afraid.

Soviet scientist and teacher, author of works on the Marxist methodology of science

In the history of science, the name of I. I. Prezent is associated with the history of Lysenkoism.

Biography

After graduating from school, he taught at the railway school. 1921 - executive secretary of the county committee of the RKSM, head. political education department of the provincial committee of the RKSM in Pskov.

He graduated from the Leningrad State University in 1926 (according to some sources, the legal department, according to others, the biological department).

Since 1925, I. I. Present has been participating in the work of the natural science section of the Scientific Society of Marxists (NOM), founded in 1919. He worked at the All-Union Institute of Plant Growing, taught at the Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute. A. I. Herzen.

Since 1930 - Head of the Department of Dialectics of Nature and Evolutionary Teachings of Leningrad State University. He served as scientific adviser to the President of VASKhNIL on philosophical issues. In 1935-1941 he was deputy editor-in-chief of the journal "Yarovizatsiya". In the period from 1935 to 1938 he was a scientific consultant at the All-Union Breeding and Genetic Institute.

In 1934, he began to cooperate with T. D. Lysenko and from 1938 became his closest collaborator and ideologist of the "Michurinites".

In 1943-1951 he was a professor at Leningrad State University; in 1948-1951 - head of the department and dean of the biology and soil faculty of Moscow State University; in 1951-1955 - senior researcher at VASKhNIL.

In 1951, shortly after the "devastating" VASKhNIL session of 1948, biologists, unable to criticize Lysenko, focused their criticism on Prezent. As a result of this, in November 1951, Present was dismissed from the post of professor and head of the department of Darwinism (simultaneously at Moscow State University and Leningrad State University), and also expelled from the party. However, in the spring of 1953, with the support of Khrushchev, who sympathized with Lysenko, the Present was restored to the CPSU.

In 1956-1965 he was a senior researcher at the research base of the USSR Academy of Sciences "Gorki Leninskie".

He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1943).

I. Present in the memoirs of contemporaries

  • “Like no one else, Prezent was able to give any discussion the character of an intensified class struggle, whether it was a discussion of teaching methods or consideration of environmental issues. At the first meeting of the Biological Section of the LOKA, he said: “The October revolution in terms of shaking up theoretical attitudes is just beginning ... Everyone should be criticized. Draft review, collection of material should be carried out widely and massively in all institutions.
  • “He demanded from scientists references to party documents, declaring that there are no scientific schools in biology, there are only party and anti-party schools. Present's activities clearly reflected the new trends in the dialectization of biology - the crushing of traditional scientific schools. The image of the “dwarf male”, depicted in modern literature, does not correspond much to reality. The brilliant talent of a speaker and polemicist, an active position, courage bordering on adventurism, stories about the “heroic revolutionary past”, concern for neighbors, success with women, etc. - all this attracted many people to the Present ”(ibid.).
  • “The official philosopher of VASKhNIL was the notorious Isai Prezent, a muddler and talker, beaten more than once for leftist phrases and deeds ... While Lysenko’s followers continued shamelessly shouting that Lysenko was a “lamp of truth,” agronomists said among themselves that agricultural science "bald".
  • From an interview with Dr. n. I. G. Abramson (I. G.) from Academician A. D. Aleksandrov (A. D.), who in previous years headed Leningrad and then Novosibirsk Universities:

Isaak Izrailevich Present September 1902, Toropets, Tver province January 6, 1969, Moscow) Soviet scientist and teacher, author of works on the Marxist methodology of science. Doctor of Biological Sciences, Academician of VASKhNIL.

However, in the spring of 1953, with the support of Khrushchev, who sympathized with Lysenko, the Present was restored to the CPSU.

After it became clear that Lysenko's views are much closer to the views of modern molecular biology than the views of formal geneticists (http://www.rusproject.org/books/mironin/stalin_i_lysenko), the time has come to scrape the dirty bloopers off the name of yet another undeserved spat on by the Soviet scientist. I mean academician I. I. Present.

Isaac (Isai) Izrailevich Present was born on September 27, 1902 in the town of Toropets into a Jewish family. After leaving school, he taught at a railway school, and at the age of 19 he became the executive secretary of the Toropetsk district committee of the Komsomol (the even younger Lev Sheinin, the future author of detective stories, a major general of justice and an investigator for especially important cases of the USSR Prosecutor General's Office in time Stalinist repressions). Soon, an active Komsomol worker was noticed at the top, and he became the head of the political education department of the Pskov provincial committee of the Komsomol.

In 1926 he graduated from the three-year faculty of social sciences of Leningrad University in the legal department. It is not entirely clear from the documents which department he graduated in 1926: legal or biological. While still a student, he began to participate in the work of the natural science section of the Scientific Society of Marxists formed in 1919 (at this university), at whose meetings issues of special sciences and Darwinism were discussed (biological issues were considered at the natural science sections). "Present joined the fight against opponents Darwinism and for the “dialecticization of biology.” He gave presentations in support of genetics, and at the same time opposed the methodology of the mechanists.

For one year Prezent worked at the All-Union Institute of Plant Industry, where Acad. N.I. Vavilov and simultaneously taught at the Pedagogical Institute. A.I. Herzen. Then he began to teach at the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute.

In 1930 Present became the head of the Leningrad Society of Materialist Biologists. In 1930 or 1931, he achieved the creation of a department with the special name "Department of Dialectics and Evolutionary Teachings" at Leningrad University, while remaining at the same time an assistant professor at the Pedagogical Institute. Received a position as a researcher of the 1st category of the Institute of Philosophy of the Leningrad branch of the Communist Academy, served as a scientific consultant to the president of the All-Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (he was academician N.I. Vavilov) on philosophical issues.

In 1933 or 1934 Present came to Lysenko in Askania-Nova. In subsequent years, Isaac Izrailevich became Lysenko's closest associate. In 1935, Prezent became co-editor of the journal Vernalization, which replaced the Bulletin of Vernalization. The journal "Yarovizatsiya", in which Prezent served as deputy editor-in-chief, was Lysenko's main printed mouthpiece in the prewar years.

With the resumption of studies at Leningrad State University after the blockade was broken in 1943, President began to work as a professor, and after the war for several years he was dean of the biology and soil faculty of Moscow State University and headed the department there. After the VASKhNIL session in 1948, Present headed the Department of Darwinism at the Leningrad University

Until 1951, Present headed the chairs of Darwinism simultaneously at Moscow and Leningrad Universities. At the time when I. Present was the dean at the biology departments of Moscow and Leningrad universities at the same time, it was he who initiated the holding of the first school biology Olympiad of Moscow State University in 1951.

In November 1951, "for everyday decay" Present was dismissed from the post of professor and head of the department of Darwinism (simultaneously at Moscow State University and Leningrad State University), and also expelled from the party. At the same time, Lysenko did not stand up for Present. This is about the fact that Lysenko "suffered from nepotism" and Stalin "favored the Michurints" (see below). In the spring of 1953, the Present was restored to the CPSU.

“Isai Present is the main ideologist of Lysenkoism, who at that time held the position of dean at the biology departments of Moscow and Leningrad universities at the same time. His leadership of the Moscow Faculty of Biology ended quickly and scandalously - in 1954 he was removed for "immoral behavior."

“During the war, the present simultaneously headed the departments of genetics at Moscow and Leningrad universities, both were expelled. The fighter for proletarian biology forced students to cohabit. However, this did not affect his further career. ”

“T.D. Lysenko is widely known for his allegedly philosophical, in fact primitive ideological justifications for agrobiological research at the time of “Lysenkoism” in biology in the USSR.
It would not be necessary not only to put an entry in the dictionary, but even to mention it. He does not deserve this either as a person or as a biologist.”

“The present is the brightest star in the sky of Lysenkoism. He "was hated by the entire biology and soil faculty, apparently he dealt with them very abruptly, and they managed to push him away ... The presentation continued to reign under the auspices of Lysenko in Moscow."

“Isai Izrailevich Present is the main ideologist of the illiterate Lysenko. The present is a brilliant person. How beautifully and ardently he spoke! How blunt and, according to the style of the meeting, how rude and demagogic his statement! ... How shameless and petty he is! How he was, intoxicated with himself, careless.

As if Present "everyone was afraid."
“Nasty guy. But they still kicked him out of the university.” (MY COMMENT: they were afraid, they were afraid, but they themselves kicked out insolently, see above).

"He was short and embarrassed by this. To compensate, he wanted to please beauties! (and got burned on this later), wore shoes with very high heels and even indoors did not take off his high green top hat. He lectured on Michurin biology, their attendance was obligatory for all teachers and professors and for all students. He lectured not without ecstasy, with rhetorical figures and artistic graces. "

"They lived with Lysenko soul to soul, experiencing mutual joy from joint chatter and from the abundance of deeds."

"... a big trouble awaited him in 1937. The botanist P.A. Baranov, who then came to Odessa for a consultation with Trofim Denisovich (later a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and director of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences), found Lysenko in a state of confusion. Trofim called Baranov to his house, they drank heavily, and then Trofim began to roar, smearing drunken tears over his face and lamenting: “What the hell should I do, poor thing? Isaiah needs to be rescued! What am I to do without him? boo-o-o-o!" (personal communication of D.V. Lebedev). Isaik was rescued - the crime was not very terrible at that time: he was taken for seducing a minor, and the matter was somehow amicably settled. Trofim helped "[MY COMMENT: Pay attention. A certain Lebedev characterizes Soifer's book, from which I took this quotation, as a solid monograph. But it contains outright gossip]).

Critics of Prezent often alter Prezent's views: "Prezent was especially zealous in exposing his Lamarckian delusions... One cannot even hint at the mutual assistance reigning in living nature." In fact, it was Lysenko and Prezent, who supported him, who spoke about mutual assistance within the species.

Even those authors who are trying to rehabilitate Lysenko, for some reason write about the Present with indignation. Let me quote S. Russiyanov, who is mistaken this time: “It’s just completely incomprehensible - what does the personality of I.I. Prezent have to do with it, as well as the ideological and philosophical justification by Prezent of Lysenko’s works to Lysenko’s works themselves? Or Lysenko should have publicly forbidden Prezent to interpret his work (I wonder how he could do this, and their areas of interest differed)? By the way, if Present was so dear to Lysenko, why did he allow him to be expelled from the CPSU? After all, according to the logic of the anti-Lysenkoites, Trofim Denisovich was simply omnipotent and omnipresent. By the way, this is one of the standard tricks of Lysenko's opponents, which is used by them throughout the discussion and continues to be used.Lacking scientific grounds for criticizing Lysenko, or not understanding the essence of Lysenko's work, they criticize the work of Prezent and his students and pass it off as criticism of the work Lysenko himself. Very "scientific" and "ethical" it turns out. In addition, it is necessary to make a reservation that the works of the Present and the views of biology are simply illiterate, but, again, what does Lysenko’s work have to do with it and why talk about his “large-scale offensive” with the support of Present. Finally, read the works of Lysenko, figure out first who attacked whom, and who supported whom in what. And finally, give a comparative analysis of the works of Lysenko and Prezent "(end of quote). [MY COMMENT: I read Prezent's works. I did not find any illiterate statements.].

And now I will give examples good reviews. “Prezent possessed a brilliant talent as an orator and polemicist, he was distinguished by an active position, courage bordering on adventurism.”

Recently, 2nd year students of SPbGIEU asked one of their teachers about how he studied in the Stalin years at Leningrad State University. According to him, the top three favorite teachers included Andrey Andreevich Markov, Jr., Isaac Izrailevich Present and Associate Professor of the Department Ancient Greece and Rome Calistov. The teacher decided that he would inherit the logical sequence from Markov Jr., energy from Prezent, Isaac Izrailevich Prezent taught a biology course. He burst into the hall like a whirlwind, charging all the students with his energy. He was a wonderful speaker, everyone listened to his lectures with rapture. True, it was not so easy for him to pass the exam. The students never knew in advance what he might ask them, he could ask any question he wanted.”

Academician Present, by the way, criticized and vilified and kicked in every possible way by today's geneticists, turned out to be one of the most competent participants who spoke at the 1948 session of VASKhNIL. English language(http://www.rusproject.org/books/mironin/stalin_i_lysenko). Apparently, he read in the original all the papers he cited at the session.

A brilliant polemicist, academician Present, citing his own works by geneticists, very clearly and accurately “smeared on the wall” all the geneticists who spoke, who tried to justify themselves at the session. His report is distinguished by sparkling humor. Here is a typical example of his speech at the August session of VASKhNIL. I. I. Present. ... "even Academician Nemchinov is not a geneticist, but a statistician, even if he has his own point of view on Morganism." (Laughter, applause.)

V. S. Nemchinov. "Why shouldn't I have it?"

I. I. Present. “I am not speaking in reproach, but in praise of the fact that you have your own point of view, although in reproach to the fact that you have just such a point of view.” (Laughter.)

A photograph from that period shows that Present was a very handsome man. Straight nose, thin mustache above the upper lip, Hair straight, combed back.

And here's what came to my mind. The son of the Jewish people Isai Present. Son of the Russian people Trofim Lysenko. One is non-party, the other is a member of the CPSU (b), both fought for a brighter future in the USSR. Both defended their original understanding of the mechanisms of heredity.
