The most famous tests for political views. Test: Political Coordinates

This free test will help you determine your political beliefs on the main political scale of Western democracies. There are other tests for determining “political positions” and “political opinions” that are often criticized for using various tricks to push the respondent to certain answers, for example, shifting emphasis or phrasing questions in such a way as to provoke an emotional reaction of the respondent. Unlike them, in this test, the questions are formulated without any "rigging" and manipulations.

Explaining the quadrants

Left liberalism (Social liberalism): People in this quadrant defend the freedom of the individual in matters of taxation to provide benefits to those who need them. They strive to find a balance between personal freedom and social justice, and support the ideas of multiculturalism, secular government and international cooperation. And although they are usually skeptical about the role of the state in the lives of citizens, nevertheless, they believe that the state should legally fight discrimination and provide equal conditions for all

Right Communitarianism (Conservatism): People in this quadrant uphold the traditional social and economic order and advocate state sovereignty. They see themselves as defenders of their ancestral ideas, support strict immigration laws, traditional values, and a strong military. Although they believe that the state plays an important role in matters of national security and culture, they are skeptical about the role of the state in economic issues.

Left Communitarianism (Social Democracy): People in this quadrant advocate for collective solutions to both social and economic problems. They tend to support a government that limits the excesses of capitalism and reduces inequality through a mixed economy and welfare state. They support collective decisions, economic redistribution and shared values in society through participatory democracy and the state.

Right Liberalism (Libertarianism): People in this quadrant support freedom as a major political good in every way. They are staunch supporters of both personal and economic freedom, are very skeptical of collective plans and goals, and, on the contrary, attach great value the principle of voluntary association and the ability of everyone to draw their own conclusions. Generally, they place less importance on the role of the state than people in the other three quadrants, and, conversely, believe in the spontaneity of the social order of the market.

Horizontal axis: Left-Right

In our test, the Left-Right Axis measures a respondent's economic views. The "Left" supports government intervention and economic regulation, while the "Right" supports economic freedom and laissez-faire. This means that the "Left" tends to support the state's efforts to curb what it sees as unfair or immoral free market activities, while the "Right" tends to believe that transactions between private parties should, in the main, be without interference from the state.
However, the scale that reflects the respondent's position on economic issues is not sufficient to capture significant variations in these two groups. Therefore, we have introduced another axis.

Vertical axis: Communitarian-Liberal

All liberals proceed from the belief that upholding individual freedoms is more important than satisfying the needs of society. Left liberals tend to believe that a person cannot use his freedoms without a certain level of education and material comfort. In their opinion, this makes it necessary to redistribute between the rich and the poor. On the contrary, the Liberal Right tends to believe that taxing a person against his will to provide social benefits to others is an act of violence and thus violates the freedom of the individual. They support charity and assistance for the poor, provided that such is voluntary.
All communitarians proceed from the premise that the well-being of society is above the idiosyncratic desires of specific individuals. Right-wing Communitarists hold so-called paternalistic political views. They advocate a hierarchical society and take a tough stance on threats - criminals are in prison, and foreign countries held back by strong defences. For their part, while Left ideologues tend to espouse liberal values, research points to a significant segment of voters who are both left-leaning on the economy while maintaining the most traditional values of their society and skeptical of immigration (Mudde 2013).

Disadvantages and limitations

Our test is designed to cover the mainstream political views that exist in contemporary Western democracies. Therefore, it failed to reflect extreme and niche views such as anarcho-syndicalism, anarcho-capitalism, Orthodox socialism and fascism. While there are political coordinates tests that attempt to capture the full range of opinions within a relatively simple quadrant, their practical results (such as identifying centrist democratic leaders who look exactly like Hitler and Kim Jong-un) are rather misleading. than inform.

Another problem is that while the two axes are equally important in theory, the reality of parliamentary politics suggests that in practice alliances rarely form between left and right. And while Liberals and Communitarians could, in principle, form an alliance against their counterparts, this has not been the case in realpolitik. Therefore, despite the fact that the Left-Right axis is often called obsolete, it nevertheless remains the only important one in American and European politics.

This page presents a test with which you can determine your ideological type, described by the model of "political coordinates" (or "political compass").So, in total there are four types of ideologies, which, for convenience, are usually written English words: authoritarian left(AL), authoritarian right(AR) libertarian left(LL) and libertarian right(LR). As you can see, each ideology is represented by a combination of two terms: they describehow a person understands individual and economic freedoms.

The authoritarian/libertarian division defines a person's attitude towards individual freedoms. So, authoritarian believe that in order to achieve public order, citizens must delegate part of their powers to the authorities, which, on their behalf, will shape the course further development countries, while libertarian believe, Whatthe state has no right to impose its laws if the citizen who is required to comply with them has not given his consent to this.

As a result, carriers authoritarian types of ideologies adhere to statist views on the structure of the country: they believe that there should be a power (not necessarily democratic), whose task is to organize people and submit to the law, without which, in their opinion, the existence of a civilized society is not possible. In turn, carriers libertarian ideologies are anarchists: they believe that society is adapted to self-organization and that in fact there is no need to obey the laws. Being open to cooperation and understanding the rules of the game to which they subscribed, people will not violate them. In the understanding of anarchists in life, as in a chess game, most people will not play against the rules, because in this case, firstly, they will not enjoy the game itself, and, secondly, they will lose confidence in themselves in front of others community members.

The left/right scale defines a person's views on economic freedom: left come outfrom the position that there is not or should not be private property and, as a result, the poor and the rich, while according to right each person is free to dispose of his property at his own discretion, because of which the poverty of individual people is perceived by them as a consequence of the fact that a person was deprived of this right or limited himself in it.

At the intersection of these scales, four ideologies are formed: AL, AR, LL And LR. Consider how they are presented in modern society:
Often authoritarian left adheres to the ideas of socialism. Supporting the state, they consider its main task to be the redistribution of wealth in society by collecting taxes from the rich and turning them in favor of the poor. For this reason, ALs believe that the state has the right to regulate the economy: impose duties, raise taxes, build factories at its discretion, etc. They support the financing of free medicine and education. To date, AL includes modern Russia, Scandinavia, most EU and CIS countries. The worst option for the development of this ideology is the state, in which the power entirely belongs to individuals who form its national course ( North Korea, Venezuela, poor authoritarian African countries). In such states, there is strict censorship, and all big business belongs to the authorities.

In its turn authoritarian right-wingers often have conservative views. They oppose the right of the state to intervene ineconomic activity of citizens. In their understanding, its role should be limited to the maintenance of public order and the security of the free exchange of goods and services (the market). According to AR, the right to private property is sacred, so they are in favor of lowering taxes and reducing the share of state-owned enterprises. As a result, countries with this ideology lack free healthcare and education.AR includes Poland, the Republican states of the USA, Japan. The worst option for the development of such an ideology is a state where economic freedom and a high standard of living are combined with a complete absence of individual freedoms (Singapore and the United Arab Emirates). Homophobia, sexism, religiosity and censorship often prevail in such a society.

The libertarian left are the bearers of the anarcho-communist(as they say today) ideologies. In their understanding, the equality of all people is achievable by building a stateless society that functions through self-government, and not through availability (as inAL) vertical branches of power. LL oppose coercion to live “right” and believe that sooner or later society itself will come to understand that mutual assistance is the best way to overcome inequality. The main theorist of anarcho-communism is the Russian philosopher Pyotr Kropotkin. It should also be understood that today this ideology has not been implemented anywhere, but there are countries striving for it (Finland and Switzerland).

Libertarian right represents ideas of anarcho-capitalism. Like LL, they believe that the state is evil, since society is capable of self-organization even without its coercion. Atrespecting the right of every person to dispose of their property, they see market relations at the heart of everything:it is more profitable for each person to produce and exchange goods and services, living in peace with other people, rather than resorting to violent methods to achieve prosperity. The ideal world of LR is one where each person realizes himself through creative activity, creating the benefits that other people need. The main ancap theorists are the famous economists Murray Rothbard and Ludwig von Mises. Of course, it should be understood that such a society cannot exist without a high level of education of the population: otherwise, a war of all against all may begin, reminiscent of the times of the Wild West.

Please note that this information is not enough to fully understand all the differences between the ideologies described. If you are interested in this topic, I recommend that you start familiarizing yourself with the definitions of the terms I used, which were not previously known to you.

At the end of the test, you will receive two values corresponding to the scales"authoritarian/libertarian"and “left/right”: the closer they are to the number 0, the more “authoritarian” or “left” qualities are manifested in your ideology, the closer to the number 39, the more “libertarian” or “right” are manifested. For example, a result of "35 and 33" means that you are a hard-core libertarian right (LR).

Since not all people are carriers of a pronounced ideology, intermediatetypes: relatively speaking, they can be called “social democrats” (between AL and LL), authoritarians (between AL and AR), liberals (between AR and LR), anarchists (between LL and LR), and centrists (an ideology without significant dominanceany poles).

So, let's go directly to the test itself:

When answering questions, try not to rush. Answer honestly: in the way that is right in your opinion, and not as is customary in the society where you live. Try to giveas many confident answers as possible (avoid the options “Rather yes” and “Rather no”) - in this case, the result is more likely to indicate a pronounced ideology.

Vkontakte is one of the most controversial fields of the questionnaire. And all because their Political Views you can’t enter: just choose from ready-made options. Here are all available on this moment nine options: indifferent, communist, socialist, moderate, liberal, conservative, monarchist, ultraconservative, libertarian.

Well, let's go through the list of preferences, shall we?

1. Indifferent views

Identical to the absence of views. Literally, indifferent.
If you don’t go to the polls and don’t watch political news, feel free to bet.

2. Communist views

Well, who does not know who the communists are? They are the so-called. left.
"an organization of society in which the economy is based on public ownership of the means of production."- wiki.
Lenin alive? Feel free to put this status 🙂

3. Socialist views

Social - public. Wiki: "the process of production and distribution of income is under the control of society." Is private property undeniably wrong? We put socialist political views.

4. Moderate views

Maybe you are a supporter of communism, or maybe socialism? Conservatism? You are not sure, but you follow the news, you have your own assessment of events in the political arena, but you do not have the desire to go to demonstrations, but would you prefer a more useful pastime? Great, put moderate political views, like 🙂

5. Liberal views

In other words, centre-right.
"individual human freedoms are the legal basis of society and the economic order"- wiki. Omg. I will list the terms, and you will understand: freedom, capitalism, market, human rights, rule of law, social contract, equality and so on. By the way, also from the wiki.
Freedom, equality? Liberalism, put in your views.

6. Conservative views

Commitment to traditions, age-old foundations. State order is the main thing. Reforms? No, no, just not reforms. If everything is so, without reforms, well, declare your views as conservative.

7. Monarchist views

8. Ultraconservative views

If you have set yourself conservative views, but do not feel the necessary satisfaction, set ultra-conservative ones. I searched on Google, apparently, you want to return the old foundations and are ready for anything for this, if you have such views on VKontakte.

9. Libertarian views

Libertarian preferences on VKontakte appeared later than the others, a separate post was written about them:.

The End. I tried to paint everything as neutrally as possible.

I would like to hear the opinion of readers, to find out who has set what views, what theses he adheres to when speaking about politics. Feel free to write, I am always glad to any comment, even if it is a one-word unsubscribe! It is better, of course, to write in more detail, you can discuss: after all, not always, almost never, real ones do not fit any of the above nine points. Write 🙂
