Ford Focus 2 liter. Ford Focus II (2004–2011): medical history. Duratorq TDCi powerplants

The Russian Focus II was equipped with gasoline engines of 1.4 liters (80 hp), 1.6 liters (100 and 115 hp), 1.8 liters (125 hp) and 2.0 liters (145 hp). Dealers also sold versions with a 1.8-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 115 horsepower. As standard, the 1.4-liter, 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter engines were combined with a five-speed manual transmission of the IB5 series, and with the 2.0-liter - the same “five-speed”, but with the MTX75 index, capable of “digesting” a larger torque. For all gasoline engines, except the 1.4-liter, a four-speed automatic transmission was offered.

In 2008, Ford introduced the updated Focus, which many even called the third “Focus” - the car was so radically transformed. But it was a classic restyling. The car now has new fenders, a hood, bumpers, headlights, exterior mirrors, and sidewalls - without moldings, but with more dynamic stiffeners. And the most noticeable innovation is the radiator grille in the form of a huge inverted trapezoid. For all versions except the sedan, LED rear lights began to be offered as an option. Another luxury Titanium package has appeared. In the cabin, the climate control unit and instrument panel have been updated. The finishing materials have become even better. But technically the Focus has not changed. It is the restyled versions that are preferable for purchase - most of the congenital diseases in such “Focuses” had already been cured by this time.

Modifications of Ford Focus II

Ford Focus II (2004–2011): case history

Body

As a rule, the inspection of the specimen you like begins with the body. We still greet people based on their clothes. And if Focus didn't inspire you with its appearance, do not rush to refuse. Faded paint, sandblasted sills at the bottom and darkened decorative details on cars with high mileage are, rather, signs of natural aging rather than barbaric use. Particular attention is paid to the chrome trim on the trunk lid: corrosion at the point of contact with the body appears after two or three Russian winters. It costs about 5,000 rubles. At the same time, check the license plate illumination - its wiring succumbs to corrosion quite quickly. Moreover, hatchbacks and sedans suffer from this to a greater extent. Repair - 1500 rub.

In winter, the touch buttons of the trunk lock often freeze due to moisture. In addition, the Focus has had a signature problem since the first generation - a souring hood opening lock. In order for it to open easily, you need to lubricate the inner surface of the emblem covering the lock cylinder. Better yet, replace the standard plastic lock (RUB 3,000) with a metal one from Mondeo. The central locking often fails, causing not only the doors to be blocked, but also the gas tank flap. Therefore, an attempt to refuel with a faulty central lock may be unsuccessful.

Salon

The interior of the "Focuses" is assembled carefully and conscientiously. Even with age, squeaks and crickets do not bother him. And fabric upholstery is easy to dry clean and is wear-resistant. True, it happens that interior equipment and electrics are moping. There have been complaints about the failure of seat heating. Moreover, for the original “hot water bottle” you will have to pay about 10,000 rubles. There are known cases of climate control vagaries due to the failure of the cabin temperature sensor (RUB 2,500). Therefore, checking the performance of the air conditioner before purchasing a used Focus is advisable. Also drive the “stove” in different fan modes - the “whistle” of the motor will indicate its imminent demise. The new electric motor will empty your pocket by 7,500 rubles. True, a burnt resistor (900 rubles) can often be the culprit for the sudden “death” of a fan. Low beam and headlight bulbs often burn out, and to replace them you have to remove the headlight unit. And in winter you need to be prepared to replace failed elements of the side mirrors. The new amalgam is estimated at 2000 rubles.

Engine

Mechanics praise the basic 1.4-liter engine - it has virtually no congenital problems. The main thing is not to forget on time, every 80 thousand kilometers, to update the timing belt. True, due to its modest volume and power, it is usually “twisted” at full blast and it works for wear, falling into second hands already at the limit of its resource.

The 1.6-liter engine (100 hp), which was installed on the first Focus, rightfully bears the title of the most widespread and reliable. It accounts for more than a third of all “Focuses” presented on the market today. The South African-assembled motor is intended for use in third world countries. Its simple design determines excellent maintainability and low cost of operation. But many consider this unit to be rather weak for modern car. Especially paired with an automatic transmission.

Another thing is its 115-horsepower brother, equipped with a variable valve timing system on the intake and exhaust shafts. The engine's thrust is already quite sufficient in all modes, and it gets along much better with an automatic transmission, and in terms of efficiency it is not inferior to the 100-horsepower version. Only this modern motor quickly “runs out” of the phase reflex coupling (RUB 11,500). True, on modernized machines the unit has become more durable.

Modifications with “fours” with a volume of 1.8 and 2.0 liters are second only to versions with a 1.6 liter engine (100 hp). Both engines are identical in design and suffer from common ailments. The service life of the engines is 350 thousand km. And the timing drive has a long-lasting chain, which is usually replaced after 200 thousand km. But in order for the engines to live safely into old age, after the first “hundred” you should pay attention to the valve cover gasket (RUB 1,000), which begins to poison the oil. However, at first you can limit yourself to tightening the bolts that are weakening due to vibrations. And then only replacement. By this time, as a rule, the upper hydraulic engine mount wears out (RUB 3,500).

The unreasonable melancholy of the 1.8-liter engine (it appears less frequently on the 2.0-liter) - poor traction and cold starts, rough idle speeds and increased fuel consumption - was associated with unfinished software of the electronic engine control unit. Therefore, dealers changed its firmware depending on the malfunction, although they were extremely reluctant to take these measures. Ignition coils, high-voltage wires, and fuel pumps are also short-lived. The throttle body and the exhaust gas recirculation valve become dirty quite quickly. Neutralizers (34,000 rubles) do not differ in mileage either, the life expectancy of which depends on engine oil consumption. If the engine's appetite increases to 200 grams per 1000 km, you need to sound the alarm and contact service. Otherwise, expensive repairs are guaranteed.

It is advisable to change the oil in a 1.8 liter turbodiesel every 5–10 thousand km, and refuel only at proven network gas stations. And then the high-pressure fuel pump (HFP) will cross the 200 thousand km mark. Repair - from RUB 30,000. You will have to spend money on new injection nozzles (RUB 12,500 each) and flush the exhaust gas recirculation valve. After 100 thousand km, the dual-mass flywheel wears out. A similar problem, by the way, occurs on the 2.0-liter gasoline engine. If you feel jerking when starting off and a characteristic rattling sound, change it immediately. The part is expensive - from 25,000 rubles, but the consequences of the destruction caused by the flywheel will be even more noticeable.

Transmission

On a manual IB5 gearbox, after 50–80 thousand km, “departures” of the second gear are known due to weak synchronizers. And when working with an increased load, the pinion axis in the differential may burst, which threatens a hole in the crankcase and repairs costing 100,000 rubles. If during a test drive the box “howls like a beast,” it means the input shaft bearing is worn out. And it urgently needs to be changed. Otherwise, the consequences can be depressing.

But the “mechanics” of the MTX75 are more durable. True, over time, oil seals and gear shift rod seals leak, and due to the low level of transmission oil, the shafts and gear rims quickly wear out. The clutch can last 100 thousand km or more, if not for a weak release bearing, made in a single block with the clutch slave cylinder, which wears out after 50 thousand km.

But the “automatic” is as simple as five kopecks and reliable as a tank. The 4F27E gearbox was installed on various Ford models back in the late 1980s, so today it is almost completely free from childhood diseases. After 150 thousand km, you will only need to repair the valve body (RUB 22,000) and replace the pressure regulator solenoids.

Suspension

With the driving properties of the Focus II, everything is in perfect order thanks to the exquisitely tuned independent suspension. Its main elements are long-lived. The idyll is broken by the support bearings of the struts, “nursing” on average 40–70 thousand km. Approximately the same amount was allocated to the wheel bearings, which are replaced as an assembly with the hubs. When replacing, do not forget about the ABS sensors - they are often damaged during dismantling. Light knocks in the suspension after 40,000 km will make themselves felt by the stabilizer struts. But the bushings last almost twice as long. At the same time, at 80–110 thousand km, the turn will come to update the ball joints assembled with a lever and silent blocks. And then shock absorbers are on the way (4,200 rubles each).

In the rear suspension, the stabilizer struts are updated every 60–80 thousand km. The bushings last on average one and a half times longer. By “hundred” the lower arms wear out. Shock absorbers (3,800 rubles each) have a slightly longer lifespan - they often reach 110–140 thousand km.

In the steering system, the rod ends are enough for 50–80 thousand km. And the rack itself on the first cars was even changed under warranty, but by 2008 it became more durable. Moreover, versions with 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines were equipped with a traditional hydraulic booster, and more powerful modifications came with an electro-hydraulic power steering, which can “burn out” the pump control board. Usually you have to change the entire assembly for 28,000 rubles.

Bottom line

Finding a technically serviceable Ford Focus II will not be difficult. If you are not satisfied with modifications with reliable 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines (100 hp), you can find a Focus from Europe with an equally reliable 2.0 liter turbodiesel. True, we have few such versions. And it’s better to opt for post-restyling cars - they have already suffered from childhood diseases.

Faults and repairs of the Focus 3 Duratec 2.0 engine

Engine Ford Duratec HE Ti-VCT 2.0 l. 150 hp was developed by Mazda. The basis was the old Duratec HE 2.0L 145 hp. which was equipped with a variable valve timing system and direct injection (GDI). According to the plant, the service life of the Ford Duratec HE Ti-VCT engine is 300 thousand km; due to its novelty, the actual service life is unknown.
The engine power for Russia was reduced to 149 hp, in order to reduce taxes, the real figure for the motor is 160-163 hp, what to do to restore it, read below.
Like its predecessor, it also has a timing chain drive, which significantly increases reliability. Chain life is 200-250 thousand km. It is a known fact that the GDI system is demanding on fuel quality and with our gasoline, the first candidate for failure is the fuel injection pump. When accelerating sharply, a car with this engine does not react immediately, a certain dip is noted, after which it starts to drive. There were also vibrations at low and idle speeds (a feature of the Duratec 2.0 HE Ti-VCT engine). To ensure that the engine lives happily ever after after the end of the warranty period, change the oil more often than required, once every 8-10 thousand km, but if you don’t care, change it once every 20 thousand, after the warranty you will change the engine)).
Any other weak points not identified, owners of Focus 3 with such an engine speak very positively about it.

Ford Duratec HE Ti-VCT engine tuning

Reflashing the Ford Focus 3 2.0 engine

As was said earlier, the engine is artificially strangled to 149 horsepower for tax, the real engine power is 163 horsepower, to get it, you need to contact a tuning office with your own firmware programs or firmware from Euro cars. Up to 5000 rpm the engine remains standard, from 5000 to 6500 an increase is felt, while fuel consumption increases slightly. In addition, there are firmwares that remove failure during acceleration and increase the elasticity of the Focus 3 engine at medium speeds. To increase the efficiency of the firmware, you need to replace the intake and exhaust (the Focus is equipped with both from ST), due to this the power increases to 170+ hp. In general, there is an option here to play tricks and slightly improve the engine’s performance without affecting the service life.

Ford Focus 2, mileage 75 thousand km, age - since October 2005. The warranty period has expired, but the mileage warranty has not expired. The engine started smoking - oil consumption - 2 liters thousand km. Only serviced by an authorized dealer, all marks are correct. I have never filled below 95 gas. They poured the oil themselves during maintenance.

And off we go - the first diagnostics - exhaust valves - head repair 61,400 rubles, continues to smoke, the guarantee for the work does not work, because the reason was not established correctly - now replacing the block assembly, the cost is about 130 thousand rubles, a total of about 200 thousand , with a residual value of about 250 thousand, direct losses are about these same 200 thousand. After two and a half years, the car began to cost simply nothing. No residual value. More expensive than Mercedes luxury models are a waste of money.

The routes are the same as before in the Honda Accord. It only had the valves adjusted once. All. Here the engine is absolutely not repairable. The block with cylinders and crankshaft is replaced, despite the fact that the compression or oil scraper ring may fail. Mazda 3 allows engine repairs. Typical Russian roulette - no responsibility - the tarantay rides for two years - and after that claims are not accepted. The worst thing is the two-liter engine from the older Ford Mondeo line.

Now, for me and my friends, the Ford brand represents an inept car with great ambitions. Not a penny for it. Too dangerous.

It starts normally - it pulls too, just the oil consumption. And the main problem is the low mileage - 75 thousand before essentially overhauling the engine, under typical operating conditions - there was not a single gas station except 95, all at gas stations with some kind of logo - no fuel trucks. Service during the loan repayment process is only from dealers , with marks. The routes are approximately the same, I had previously driven on them in another car and could not imagine that the reliability was below any criticism with the formal end of the manufacturer’s responsibility. There is no internal feeling of guilt for the fact that you yourself messed up, poured rubbish somewhere or did not undergo the necessary maintenance. This is the most annoying thing. And there is no possibility of repair - there is no production of units, the cylinder mirror is normal, so says their unit operator, but you still need to essentially throw out the engine. It’s also completely incomprehensible, despite the fact that a similar engine in the Mazda 3 is being repaired. The price of the issue is practically the cost of a car with a three-year term. For modern cars, this is just the beginning of operation. That’s why I write that it’s Russian roulette, maybe you’ll get lucky, but what if not?

It’s like he’s guilty without guilt and is responsible for someone’s engineering decisions.

When working on the problem, I turned to experts from MADI, I won’t name their names, there is no consent, I received comments: the exhaust valves cannot fail at such a mileage, but they cannot write a categorical conclusion about a manufacturing defect, without which legal claims for essentially doomed to futility, they found cases of incorrect installation of oil scraper rings on pistons during warranty cases of engine repair and disassembly. The Moscow engine repair company Mechanica also reports repeated cases of people contacting them with similar questions - when an official dealer offers to replace the unit assembly, but they do not have spare parts for repairs.

Thus, the risk of owning a Ford Focus 2 with an engine with an aluminum block is very high, and these are essentially all engines; in case of any violation inside the engine, one repair method is to throw out the engine block and repair the head.

There is no information anywhere about what the mileage rate is before replacing this very block. It may turn out that the owners will be overwhelmed by a wave of repairs at unreasonably high prices and later they will simply not be able to sell the car. Information about trouble flows quickly.

I don’t see the point in starting everything as it was, Nice car for those .... years and for that money, current prices are of course a complete ahtung for a small rastaling.

The first aftertaste from the purchase and operation passes, everyday life comes, so I’ll write a few lines about them.

Positive:

1) Engine 2l and 150 hp. No matter how much I drove and enjoyed the dynamics, for the prescribed amount of power it delivers one hundred percent and at the bottom and at the top the torque is approximately the same, it is enough both on the highway with sharp accelerations and in the city. An example, loaded with a full family, 2 sacks of potatoes, bags, from 60 km/h uphill to 160 km/h (I tried not to push any more) in just a few seconds, always passing this village with someone, but I had to compete and not once did I I didn’t lose it, but there were decent cars and an X5 3 liter. turbodiesel and accord with a 2.4 engine, and I even drove a friend’s golf uphill, with a 1.4 (140 hp).

2) The suspension, you can both praise and scold, in this paragraph the praise is for 87,000 mileage, and even on our roads before the sale, only the front left stabilizer strut was changed under warranty, and even then it was done under warranty, maybe. and would not have been covered, but on the highway the “student” cut off to avoid an accident, sliding into Kuwait on this particular side and ending up in a small hole. Moderately tough.

3) Handling is very, very good just before it was raised a little, on those cars the handling is noticeably worse, but here everyone has their own either more controllability or more comfort and cross-country ability, I understand both.

4) Comfort, of course, everything is very subjective, but for me everything is very good and there is sufficient sound insulation, considering the class of the car, and comfortable seats, steering wheel, adjustments, in a word, the ergonomics are solid 4+, regarding “insects” there are several sores that can be treated without very stressful, and there are a lot of videos on the Internet. I will list those that appeared to me and I managed to solve myself: the first bugs came from the doors, or rather from decorative inserts or maybe. more correctly, the outer inserts on the sides of the doors, I glued everything, it took about 2 hours, the second thing that started to strain was the temperature sensor on the dashboard, it rumbles as if half of the torpedo was shaking, it’s not very convenient to glue it with Shumka, it seems to be very easy to get it, you need to pick it out with a screwdriver and preferably wrap it with electrical tape first so as not to scratch it. It happens that some people have heard the side panels of the front seats squeak, but this did not happen to me.

Negative points:

1) One of the engine mounts sank quite quickly, literally before the sale it started leaking and started to vibrate unpleasantly, I didn’t do anything about it and sold it as is.

2) Steering rack EUR, after a certain period of time I noticed unpleasant noises when passing through holes, cracks and everything that we don’t do, at low speed, contacting the dealer I received the answer yes and b., they say the design feature of the rack, here So, upon inspection, on a “suspended” car, when you pull the rack rod with your hand on either side, there is such a decent play, BUT, as I was told, everything is super at speed, you can’t hear it and okay, everything is supposed to be the same. and it will be, however, in 2013, unless of course I’m mistaken, the ESD was replaced with power steering, but the dealer does not recognize the problem with the ESD.

3) From ergonomics, here’s what I don’t like at all: the mini joystick for shifting gears, for me it’s just bullshit, it’s not clear who and why, was it really necessary to stand out from the crowd just like that, couldn’t they really do it like in normal cars, switching with a lever, but this is purely for me.

4) Passability, of course, with such clearance is very impassable, so whoever looks at the secondary car carefully inspect the bottom of the car, for example, my heat shield was torn, it is completely replaced, the issue price is around 10K. and 3-4 times to rehatch the protection, everywhere it’s different, on average it cost me 600 rubles.

5) We approached the most delicious woman MMM BOX PAUR her mother SHIFT. If anyone asks for advice, I usually don’t give them, but here I will gladly DO NOT TAKE, I repeat once again for the especially gifted DO NOT TAKE. Not only is there no more comfort than with a manual, but there are also constant glitches, the car stalls while driving, then from time to time there is some kind of sausage, then the speed does not increase, the cure is to restart the engine, but up to a certain point, for me this moment occurred at 84,000 kilometers (clutch, shaft seals, electronic transmission control unit), the warranty has passed for years, even if the clutch is under warranty, if it is worn out it is not subject to warranty repair, and this is around 50K rubles. This pleasure with discounts from the dealer cost me 87,000 rubles, and even then the block was taken either through some kind of promotion, or in some other way, but if without discounts and promotions from the dealer it would come out something like this: Clutch 52,000, oil seals 5000 RUR + replacement 1200 RUR. (of course, with the box already removed), unit 55,000 rubles, diagnostics 1000 rubles. Removal and installation of the box 6500 rub. Uploading the firmware in any case costs 2700 rubles.

Something like this, maybe I missed something, write and ask, I’ll answer with pleasure,

Sold on September 29, 2016 for RUB 520,000. to a car dealership, in this case you need to make an engine mount, if it’s good, about 10,000 rubles, bushings on all sides - 12,000 rubles. Well, the heat shield is 10,000 rubles. everything is approximately and with good spare parts, the salon itself set the mileage to 80,000 km every other day, and the price is 579,000 rubles. They did what they were supposed to do or not, I don’t know.

Two liters automatically - and focus was a success.

Focus The problem is that there is no such car in Europe. And it is unknown whether it ever will be. But in Russia it already exists – and in this sense we are in no way inferior to America and Japan. This is because our gasoline could not be more suitable...

Gazeta.Ru spoke in detail about Ford Focuses, more than once. The model is unique in that it managed to grab the most prestigious title “A V Car of the Year” in as many as two parts of the world - first in Europe (1999), and then in America (2000). But it’s already a new century, and the passion for Focus and its revolutionary “new facets” has long subsided - the car has become familiar, and, it would seem, no longer capable of surprising anything. However, I was surprised. At least by the fact that I went to Russian market in a modification that is not coming to Europe, at least not yet.

A Focus with a two-liter engine and automatic transmission appeared in Russia. This combination is very unusual - the fact is that the automatic in the Focus, intended for Europe, comes in combination with a 1.6-liter engine, and only as an alternative type of transmission. And what we’re talking about is actually wooing America (there, as you know, there is almost total automation), Japan and the entire Asia-Pacific region.

The question is, why did they suddenly start bringing him to us?

The Moscow representative office of Ford reported that it was due to gasoline. “Asian” versions run on what we call 92, and it was considered quite logical to supply them to Russia.

The machine as a whole is well known, so there is no point in describing its general data. Let's talk in detail only about the automatic transmission.

The Focus has a four-speed automatic, with the ability disabling overdrive, with a couple of additional reduction modes - in principle, nothing unusual.

Test drive Ford Focus II 2.0MT

Online wallet store Car Wallet: Manufacturer of auto electronics and auto accessories:

However, in terms of behavior, this is a little thing with a certain temper of its own, and there is something to note here.

You may or may not enjoy driving with this automatic, depending on what mode and style you drive in. I started with the most banal mode, that is, with a simple Drive, and was unpleasantly surprised by the almost complete helplessness of the car when accelerating from a standstill or from low speed. How long does it take for it to unwind! For example, if you need to weave from a secondary road into a dense stream going along the main one, then you have to play with the gas and brake, but it doesn’t work out very well. You press the gas and press, but the car is silent and does not respond. And only after a painful delay does it fire. My random travel companion (the traffic cop, who first fined me a ticket for driving on a “deep yellow” line, and then, without hesitation, asked for a ride), associated this behavior of the car with a violent release from constipation (I won’t quote it verbatim).

Accelerating on the fly is a completely different matter. When the engine is well spun and the speed is decent, the machine is quite responsive. With frequent changes from lane to lane, a good, but not at all sharp, press of the gas pedal is enough to jump out of your lane, get into the next one and not get a horn roar and nervous blinking of the headlights in your back. However, in normal D mode it is better to drive on an open highway - this is a typical cruising mode, and it is not for ragged city driving.

Fortunately, the machine has the ability disabling overdrive. This is done with a secret, that is, invisible, button hidden under the knob of the lever (the thumb, if you lower it a couple of centimeters from the chrome “locking” key). You press, and O/D OFF (overdrive is turned off) is displayed on the panel - this means that the automatic transmission is switched to a three-stage operating mode, the overdrive gear is completely excluded from the traction range, and the remaining gears are “stretched”. A very useful mode: the machine simply transforms in it. Thoughtfulness is no longer observed, you can safely break away and join the fast-flowing stream.

By the way, the leading specialist of the branded Ford training center, whom I turned to for advice, advised me to always drive in the city with overdrive turned off - under sharply changing loads, the automatic transmission and engine are subject to less abuse. Fuel consumption, of course, increases, but not so much that it’s worth paying attention to.

On our test- I was driving a Focus sedan. In my opinion, it is less beautiful than the station wagon and the hatchback (I note that it was the hatchback that served as the basis for the application of the delights of the modern Ford New Edge design philosophy on the Focus, and therefore the “cut” was made primarily for it) - but beauty, as we know, it's a matter of taste. Functionally, the car is very good.

Classmates Ford Focus 2.0

The main competitors of the new Ford Focus Volkswagen Bora and Opel Astra in engine modifications close to the “Focus” one may well become available on the market...

Test The drive happened exactly during the hurricane on July 24, and in those extreme weather conditions I fully appreciated the car - both the protection of the electrics from water (“swims” through deep puddles where others stalled), and the success of the two lowering modes of the automatic machine (detours on lawns, where it’s smaller, but also dirtier), and six modes of intermittent operation of the wipers, and a suspension with passive steering of the rear wheels and much more. The only thing I didn't like was rear visibility. It itself is limited by the high rear of the sedan; in addition, drops roll poorly from the excessively “recumbent” rear window - it would be appropriate to install a brush there, but, of course, it is not provided on the sedan.
